GCSE students come to tuition for many reasons.
Some have lost confidence after several years of uncertainty. Some are aiming for a particular grade. Some are hoping to move into sixth form, A-level Mathematics or a more competitive course. Others are doing reasonably well, but want to feel more secure, more accurate and better prepared.
My GCSE and IGCSE tuition combines careful explanation, purposeful practice and examination preparation, while keeping the individual student’s confidence and understanding at the centre of the work.

GCSE maths difficulties often have a history.
A student may be struggling with algebra because earlier work on negatives, fractions or equations was never fully secure. They may lose marks in geometry because they do not know which facts to connect. They may find worded questions difficult because they can do the underlying technique, but cannot recognise what is being asked.
Sometimes the issue is confidence. Sometimes it is fluency. Sometimes it is exam technique. Often, it is a mixture.
One-to-one tuition allows us to identify what is really happening and work on it directly.

Effective GCSE preparation needs all three.
Students need to understand the mathematics. They need enough practice for methods to become fluent. They also need to know how to approach examination questions: how to begin, how to interpret wording, how to show working and how to recover when a question looks unfamiliar.
In tuition, we can move between these layers.
Sometimes we strip a topic back to its central idea. Sometimes we practise a method until it becomes reliable. Sometimes we work through more demanding exam-style questions that require interpretation, planning and multi-step reasoning.

The right questions at the right time
GCSE preparation is not simply about doing more questions.
It is about doing the right questions at the right time.
Sometimes a student needs a question with the unnecessary noise removed, so they can focus on the key idea without distraction. At other times, the challenge needs to be built back up: unfamiliar wording, extra steps, diagrams, mixed topics or hidden requirements.
I use carefully selected questions and, where useful, generate new exam-standard examples during sessions. This helps students develop understanding first, then practise recognising and applying it in the less predictable setting of a GCSE paper.

Students often understand more than their written work shows.
They may skip steps, use notation loosely, give an answer without enough reasoning or lose marks because their method is hard to follow. At GCSE, clear communication matters.
I help students develop written solutions that are accurate, organised and easier to understand. This includes setting work out clearly, using notation carefully, explaining reasoning where needed and learning how to present a valid method.

Exam technique without memorising scripts
Past papers and mark schemes are useful, but they need to be used intelligently.
I help students understand how marks are awarded and how to communicate their reasoning clearly. Mark schemes are valuable guides, but they should not become scripts to memorise. Students learn to present clear, valid mathematical reasoning in a way that earns credit, while understanding that a correct method may sometimes be expressed in more than one acceptable form.
The goal is not to make students dependent on exact phrasing. It is to help them understand the mathematics well enough to answer questions flexibly and accurately.

Confidence matters, but it should be grounded in real progress.
I want students to feel encouraged and supported, but also to become more precise, more resilient and more willing to work carefully. Mistakes are part of that process. They show us what needs attention and help students understand where their thinking can become stronger.

For students aiming for their next step
Some GCSE students are working towards a specific grade for sixth form, college, apprenticeship pathways or future courses.
Others are preparing for A-level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, sciences, economics or other subjects where mathematical confidence will matter.
For these students, tuition can help with both examination preparation and readiness for what comes next. That may mean strengthening algebra, improving accuracy, developing problem-solving habits or learning to approach unfamiliar questions with more independence.
